
SOFIA BUCHUCK
Poet-Singer
Her work both musically and literary reflects issues of Diaspora, memory and celebrates the popular and ancestral culture of Latin America
Born in Cusco- Peru, Sofia has travelled across Latin America learning the culture and traditions of that continent.
She also speaks Quechua which she has learnt from her indigenous grand mother.
With a BA in Spanish and Latin American studies, she has just finished an MA in Hispanics and cultural studies, and an MA in oral history. She has studied singing at the national music school of Mexico UNAM and completed a research in ethnomusicology during 2003.
She has also completed a diploma in Latin American poetry at the Birbeck University College,
Prices awarded in literature:

Cultural investigation
Sofia Buchuck has accomplished an ethno musicological research “All the voices-Todas las voces” first Collective CD of Andean musicians in the UK.
Sofia is the field worker researching a project in regards to the Latin American refugees in London, hosted by the Museum of London, the Evelyn Oldfield Unit and the Metropolitan University.
Soon she will be launching a multimedia artefact, a documentary and a small exhibition for this project.
Music and instrumentation
Sofia sings songs of memory of the entire continent, from theAndes to the coast and from Mexico to Argentina.
She also plays pre-Colombian instruments such as pan flutes and seeds from the rain forest. Sofia performs accompanied by Andean instruments such as charango, harp, base and guitar, Cajon-Peruano/percussion played by talented and well-known musicians based in London.
She has performed as a solo artist with her Andean band, at the International Fringe festival of Edinburgh, Wales, Festival del Pueblo- the biggest Latin American festival in London 2004, Thames festival, Bristol, and the Royal opera house 2005.
She has taken part in many musical groups as well as in theatre, dance and performing arts before setting her own show. She has a vast experience on delivering talks and workshops of Latin American culture and music, for universities, schools and symposiums.
Sofia has taken part in radio and television programs, in Ecuador, Peru, England, Italy, Bulgaria, Chile and Mexico.
She performs yearly for the refugee week and has produce concerts to support human right issues.
Her second CD “Violets” has been recorded in her recent return to Peru-her home country, which has been presented at national television in Peru 2004.
Sofia was the first Hispanic singer to perform at the Royal Opera house accompanied by three fantastic musicians and one of the best Peruvian guitarists “Julio Humala”, Chano Diaz, Jose Navarro, Kiefer Santander and Diego Laverde. In the 2005 Sofia B was awarded the prize as best Latin American artist of the year in the UK.
In the 2005 she has given interviews at the BBC radio three, four, resonance FM and at the open air radio programme at SOAS University.
